Wenn die Querflöte fast zum Ebenbild der menschlichen Stimme wird. Nordische Klänge als Ohrenschmaus bringen Katharina Sames (Flöte) und Marie Inoue (Klavier) in ihrem Album „Nordic Treasures“ (2025)

Nordische Klänge durchziehen die passend „Nordic Treasures“ benannte und bei ARS Produktion erschienene CD der Querflötistin Katharina Sames und der Pianistin Mari Inoue. Beide begeistern mit Werken des Iren Hamilton Harty (1879-1941), der Norweger Johan Kvandal (1919-1999) und Edvard Grieg (1843-1907), der Dänen Carl Reinecke (1824-1910) und Jacob Gade (1879-1963) und der Schwedin Laura Netzel (1839-1927). Die Werke bilden dabei eine Schnittstelle zwischen Romantik und Moderne mit folkloristischen Elementen und meditativem Klanggenuss.

Das erste Werk der CD ist Hamilton Hartys „In Ireland“, es zeigt sich langsam, beruhigend und melodiös, also sehr meditativ. Die Weite Irlands wird förmlich hörbar, dazu die vogelartigen Koloraturen in der Flöte, andererseits auch die volksmusikartig beschwingt-heitere Unbeschwertheit. Hamilton Harty emigrierte 1900 nach London, war Bratschist im „Dublin Society Orchestra“, arbeitete als Klavierbegleiter und Dirigent.

Das zweite Stück des Albums ist Johan Kvandals „Nocturne“ für Altflöte und Klavier, op. 56. Kvandal ist der Sohn des Komponisten und Grieg-Biografen David Monrad Johansen (1888-1974), folglich wirkte auch Griegs Kompositionstechnik auf Johan Kvandals Werke ein. Im Vordergrund des 1980 komponierten Werkes steht die nordische Volksmusik, das Mystische, Geheimnisvolle. Langsam und nachdenklich kommt es daher, die Altflöte sorgt für Wärme und Weichheit. Dabei werfen sich Flöte und Klavier Themen zu und greifen sie wechselseitig auf.

Der berühmteste Komponist dieser CD ist der Norweger Edward Grieg, hier vertreten mit seiner Sonatine No. 1, op. 8, die den größten zeitlichen Rahmen der CD einnimmt. Diese Sonatine wurde ursprünglich für Violine und Klavier komponiert und von Naama Neuman für Flöte und Klavier bearbeitet. Gleich die melodische und rhythmische Faktur des Werkes erinnert dabei an das typisch norwegische Instrument, die Hardanger-Fiedel. Die Komposition zeigt sich froh und tänzerisch beschwingt, melodiös und von großer romantischer Leichtigkeit. Die Rhythmik spielt dabei eine bedeutende Rolle. Besonders hervorzuheben ist hier das emotionale, harmonische Zusammenspiel der beiden Protagonistinnen an Flöte und Klavier.

Es folgt Carl Reineckes „Ballade“ für Flöte und Klavier, op. 288, die langsam und getragen vorgetragen, sich zu emotionaler Tiefe emporschwingt. Carl Reinecke feierte übrigens 2024 seinen 200. Geburtstag.

Das vorletzte Stück lieferten Jacob Gade und Toke Lund Christiansen (geb. 1947) mit der „Tango Fantasia“ für Flöte und Klavier. Eingängig das Tangometrum, der packende Rhythmus, das innig-beschwingte Zusammenspiel.

Das letzte Stück des Albums zeigt uns eine wiederzuentdeckende Komponistin aus Schweden namens Laura Netzel, geb. Pistolekors. Es erklingt ihre „Berceuse“, op. 50 von 1896. Sie schrieb insgesamt an die 92 Werke, darunter 20 Lieder für Singstimme, Suiten für Violine und Klavier oder Gesang und Orgel. Ihre kompositorische Ausbildung erhielt sie von Georg Wilhelm Heintze und Charles-Marie Widor. Mit 17 Jahren debütierte sie als Pianistin. Ihre „Berceuse“ steht im Stil der Spätromantik und versinnbildlicht klanglich die Weite des Nordens in ihrer ruhigen, melodiösen und besinnlichen Anlage, als still-nachdenklicher Ausklang dieser hervorragend interpretierten und inhaltlich ausgewählten CD zu nordischer Musik.

Neben dieser eindrucksvollen CD liefert das Booklet in Deutsch und Englisch von Florian Giering in einem ausführlichen und sehr interessant geschriebenen Vorwort Näheres zu den Komponistenbiografien, ihren Werken und bringt dazu auch noch stichpunktartige Werkanalysen zum besseren musikalischen Verständnis.

Hervorzuheben ist der klare, durchscheinende Klang und die hohe Präzision der Aufnahme und Klangqualität die die 58-minütige CD zu einem wahren Ohrenschmaus werden lässt. Wobei die Querflöte von Katharina Sames fast zum Ebenbild der menschlichen Stimme verschmilzt und Marie Inoue zur kontragenialen Begleiterin wird.

Nordic sounds pervade the aptly named ‘Nordic Treasures’ CD by flutist Katharina Sames and pianist Mari Inoue, released by ARS Produktion. Both perform works by the Irish composer Hamilton Harty (1879-1941), the Norwegians Johan Kvandal (1919-1999) and Edvard Grieg (1843-1907), the Danes Carl Reinecke (1824-1910) and Jacob Gade (1879-1963) and the Swede Laura Netzel (1839-1927). The works form an interface between romanticism and modernism with folkloristic elements and meditative sound enjoyment.

The first work on the CD is Hamilton Harty's ‘In Ireland’, which is slow, calming and melodious, i.e. very meditative. The vastness of Ireland becomes literally audible, along with the bird-like colouratura in the flute and, on the other hand, the light-heartedness of the folk music. Hamilton Harty emigrated to London in 1900, was a violist in the Dublin Society Orchestra and worked as a piano accompanist and conductor.

The second piece on the album is Johan Kvandal's ‘Nocturne’ for alto flute and piano, op. 56. Kvandal is the son of the composer and Grieg biographer David Monrad Johansen (1888-1974), so Grieg's compositional technique also influenced Johan Kvandal's works. Composed in 1980, the work focusses on Nordic folk music, the mystical and mysterious. It is slow and thoughtful, with the alto flute providing warmth and softness. The flute and piano throw themes at each other and take them up reciprocally.

The most famous composer on this CD is the Norwegian Edward Grieg, represented here with his Sonatina No. 1, op. 8, which occupies the largest time frame on the disc. This sonatina was originally composed for violin and piano and arranged for flute and piano by Naama Neuman. The melodic and rhythmic texture of the work is reminiscent of the typical Norwegian instrument, the Hardanger fiddle. The composition is joyful and lively, melodious and of great romantic lightness. The rhythm plays an important role. The emotional, harmonious interplay between the two protagonists on flute and piano is particularly noteworthy.

This is followed by Carl Reinecke's ‘Ballade’ for flute and piano, op. 288, which is performed slowly and with great emotion. Incidentally, Carl Reinecke celebrated his 200th birthday in 2024.

The penultimate piece was delivered by Jacob Gade and Toke Lund Christiansen (born 1947) with the ‘Tango Fantasia’ for flute and piano. The tango metre, the gripping rhythm and the intimate, lively interplay are catchy.

The last piece on the album introduces us to a Swedish composer to be rediscovered by the name of Laura Netzel, née Pistolekors. We hear her ‘Berceuse’, op. 50 from 1896. She wrote a total of 92 works, including 20 songs for voice, suites for violin and piano or voice and organ. She received her compositional training from Georg Wilhelm Heintze and Charles-Marie Widor. She made her debut as a pianist at the age of 17. Her ‘Berceuse’ is in the style of late Romanticism and symbolises the vastness of the North in its calm, melodious and contemplative style, as a quiet and reflective conclusion to this excellently interpreted and carefully selected CD of Nordic music.

In addition to this impressive CD, the booklet in German and English by Florian Giering provides more information on the composers' biographies and their works in a detailed and very interestingly written foreword, as well as key analyses of the works for a better musical understanding.

The clear, translucent sound and the high precision of the recording and sound quality should be emphasised, making this 58-minute CD a real feast for the ears. Katharina Sames' flute almost melts into the image of the human voice and Marie Inoue becomes a contragenial accompanist.
